GSTR-3B Update 2026: Mandatory Confirmation of Tax Liability Breakup Explained

GSTR-3B Update 2026: What Taxpayers Need to Know

The GST ecosystem continues to evolve with frequent updates aimed at improving compliance and transparency. A recent advisory issued by GSTN on March 16, 2026, introduces an important procedural change in filing GSTR-3B, specifically concerning the “Tax Liability Breakup, As Applicable” tab.

This update has practical implications for all taxpayers filing GSTR-3B from the February 2026 tax period onwards.

Understanding the Tax Liability Breakup Requirement

As per Section 50 of the CGST Act, 2017, interest is applicable when tax liabilities from previous periods are paid in a later period. To address this, the GST portal includes a dedicated section in GSTR-3B called “Tax Liability Breakup, As Applicable.”

This section is meant to:

  • Capture tax liabilities related to earlier tax periods
  • Ensure accurate reporting of delayed payments
  • Facilitate correct interest computation

What Has Changed from February 2026?

Starting February 2026:

  • The GST portal auto-populates the tax liability breakup
  • Data is pulled from:
    • GSTR-1
    • GSTR-1A
    • Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF)
  • It identifies invoices belonging to previous periods but reported now

This automation reduces manual effort but introduces a mandatory confirmation step.

New Mandatory Step in GSTR-3B Filing

Before filing GSTR-3B, taxpayers must now:

  1. Go to the Payment Page
  2. Open the “Tax Liability Breakup, As Applicable” tab
  3. Review the auto-populated data
  4. Click “SAVE” to confirm (or edit if needed)

Without completing this step, you cannot proceed with filing using EVC or DSC.

Current Issue Highlighted by GSTN

Taxpayers have raised concerns that:

  • The confirmation step is being enforced even when there are no past-period liabilities
  • Ideally, it should apply only when previous period supplies are reported

GSTN has acknowledged this issue and confirmed that a resolution is underway.

Interim Solution for Taxpayers

Until the issue is fixed, GSTN recommends the following:

  • Open the “Tax Liability Breakup” tab in all cases
  • Click “SAVE”, even if no changes are required
  • Proceed with filing GSTR-3B as usual

This is a temporary workaround to ensure smooth filing during the current cycle.

Final Thoughts

This update reflects GSTN’s continued push toward automation and accuracy in tax reporting. While the added confirmation step may seem minor, missing it can block return filing entirely.

Taxpayers and professionals should:

  • Incorporate this step into their compliance checklist
  • Stay updated for further portal changes
  • Ensure timely filing to avoid interest and penalties

Until GSTN resolves the current issue, following the interim procedure is essential for seamless GSTR-3B filing.
